Ibiza feeling in Mallorca! New beach club in Portals “UM Beach House”

The tanned and beautiful have a new place to while away those summer afternoons in Puerto Portals in the form of trendy beach club, UM Beach House. A stalwart on the southwest scene for some years, this site has been completely refurbished and turned into a cool, Balinese-style beach club. So what’s on offer to set it apart from the rest? UM Beach House has a casual, Balinese-style décor with plenty of sofas and seating inside leading through to the huge terrace and swimming pool. Sea views stretch out from every window and sun loungers and Bali beds are scattered around the pool facing out to the sea.

After having a look at the menu, we kick things off with a vegetable and pork belly “coca mallorquina”, Mallorca’s interpretation of a pizza but with fresher flavours and a crunchier base. Next up, cuttlefish croquettes made in the squid’s own ink which were particularly creamy and light and the ‘patatas bravas’ made with baby potatoes in homemade brava sauce were tasty and filling. The healthy options were served next – a Buddha Bowl made up of brown rice, chickpeas, tofu, spinach, broccoli, red cabbage, avocado, edamame, goji berries and sesame sauce. This fresh, flavoursome salad is the perfect summer dish for lounging by the pool or indeed the calamari salad with quinoa in fresh basil and citrus vinaigrette that came next.

On to the main courses and first to arrive was the seared sea bass and seaweed salad with garlic sauce which was very fresh and rich in flavour although perhaps a little too garlicky for some tastes. A large pot arrives containing foie rice and beef cheeks and as the lid is taken off the smell is incredible. Served to us individually, the rice was full of flavour and the beef cheeks were tender and cooked to perfection. These dishes are not what one would expect to be served at a beach club and UM Beach House have done well to take a risk with more adventurous dishes that are well presented and delicious.

No meal would be complete without the mandatory indulgence of a dessert and UM Beach House did not disappoint as they brought out three naughty-looking desserts. Chocolate brownies with yoghurt and ice cream, Pavlova with strawberry foam and fruits of the forest and a traditional ‘crema catalana’. All three desserts were sweet and rich and brought our dining experience to a triumphant finish. UM Beach Club has the right mix of relaxing areas to sunbathe, tables for a romantic meal overlooking the sea, and places to have a sundowner cocktail with friends. The friendly service adds to the experience and the relaxing tunes make this the perfect place to unwind and indulge.

Thank you ABC Mallorca for the editorial contribution.
