Posted by Sandra on 20.06.2019

The “Nit de Sant Joan”, the night of Sant Joan, is one of the most popular festivals on the Balearic Islands from 20th to 24th of June. The Locals celebrate the arrival of summer and the eve of St John’s Day (24.06) in Mallorca is called Nit de Sant Joan, but is also often called by the Catalans Nit de Foc (foc = fire). From 23rd to 24th of June, this incredible festival should not be missed. It is a tradition to organize a barbecue on the beach, to sit with families and friends at the sea, tea lights and torches are set up on the beach and in some places even campfires are lit. The pagan customs are celebrated here, white clothes and the midnight jumping over the fire and bathing in the sea should bring luck. People write on a piece of paper what worries or wishes they have and afterwards this piece of paper is getting burned.

Especially in Palma Sant Joan is celebrated with a big party around the Parc de la Mar at the cathedral. The highlight of this event is the “Correfoc”, the so-called firewalk of the devils. Be there when the “Dimonis” celebrate the “Correfoc” from sunset. Devils spray sparks, dragons spit fire, a real wild festival. The whole thing is accompanied by drums and percussion groups. This custom should drive away the evil spirits and demons, which could bring disaster, according to old tradition.

Sant Joan is a special date in the Catalan calendar that marks the summer solstice and the date of birth of John the Baptist, who announced the arrival of Jesus, in the Christian faith. Today, however, the religious aspect takes a back seat. This important date has been celebrated by cultures all over the world for a long time before Christianity and continues to play an important role in many countries.
This magical night is also celebrated in many small villages; in some villages there are programs during the day with many attractions, such as children’s parties, music concerts or bagpipers and in the evenings the celebrations on the beach. All events take place in the open air.

But the biggest spectacle takes place on Menorca. For a whole week, everything here revolves around this festival and there are racy horses with daring riders, music and dancing for the eyes. All accommodation on Menorca is therefore fully booked for this weekend for a long time and the spectators come from all over the world. Book a tour on the water with our partner Dolphin Boats and experience Menorca at its best.
