Mallorca in January – Hiking & Family Time

Posted by Sandra on 21.01.2021

Due to the current rules and Corona restrictions, recreational opportunities are somewhat limited on the island. The virus has spread rapidly since the Christmas season, so stricter rules are now needed to contain the infection rate. This means that all bars and restaurants will be closed for 15 days and only takeaway or delivery food will be offered. In addition to shopping centres larger than 700 m², gyms will also be closed during this period. These measures will be in place until 30 January and will not affect work or school. Shops selling food or other essential products, petrol stations and hairdressers will remain open, although their capacity will be limited to 50%, or 30% in the case of facilities larger than 700 m2.

But what better thing to do at a time like this than enjoy Mallorca’s nature? The island offers countless hiking possibilities by the sea or in the mountains and the blue sea garnished with a view of the snow-covered hills of the Tramuntana in these days cannot be topped! Especially for families, we can recommend the easy but beautiful walk from Port Portals Vells to the caves and, if you want to walk further, to the lighthouse. The easy coastal hike starts in Sol de Mallorca, above the 3-finger bay of Portals Vells and you park your car in Avinguda Portals Vells where at no. 40 a staircase leads directly down and gives you a view of fine sand, bizarre rocks and turquoise-green water. To the right of the platform, after a few minutes, a path leads to Platja del Rey and from there, a short time later, a bumpy road leads to Platja del Mago. At the restaurant, a cliff path now leads from Es Mago beach on the left to a long, terraced plain from which Sa Platgeta is reached. This beach is the largest and most frequented on the coast of Portals Vells. Many sailing and motor yachts anchor here, especially at weekends. The crews’ destination is the fish restaurant located here.

The route continues to the fourth bathing bay, Platja de sa Caleta. From there, the caves Coves de la Mare de Déu are reached via a staircase and a path. The huge grotto once served as a quarry, where ashlars of sandstone were quarried for the construction of Palma Cathedral and the Church of Santa Eulàlia. This short hike to the caves is particularly suitable for families with children. You can get the complete information about the tour to the bay of Cala Refeubetx and the lighthouse via this link of the Mallorca Zeitung! Have fun hiking!
