Our favourite fair in Caimari – Fira de S’Oliva

Posted by Sandra on 10.10.2018

Caimari belongs to the municipality of Selva and has about 750 inhabitants. If you are in Mallorca, you must go there. This place is located in the north of the island and is known far beyond Spain’s borders for its good oil. Already at the approach to Caimari the rural environment impresses. From an agricultural point of view, the many olive groves and countless almond trees stand out. You can’t find any big hotel chains here.

The oil and olive fair in Caimari belongs to the most popular autumn fairs on Mallorca. On the 17th and 18th of November, visitors can taste and, of course, buy olive oil and olives from local producers in the picturesque village. Olive branches hang from almost every house and numerous volunteers take part in the preparations. “This would not be possible otherwise with our small budget at all, so mayor Pere Segui. The exhibitors are carefully selected, and so some also simply rejected: We want that the conditions fit also really to the topic. There will also be an entertaining supporting programme.

Since the area around Caimari used to live not only from oil production but also from coal production, this year the traditional coal extraction by “sitja” (coal pile) will be shown on the village square. If you like it a little quieter, you’d better come on Saturday - on Sunday the crowds are so big that the cars are backed up to the neighbouring village of Selva. Responsible for the crowd is the varied programme and the attractive stands, which are open from 10 am. Many thanks for the content of this article to the Mallorca Zeitung.
