Palma is running – Zafiro Marathon Mallorca on 13th of October

Mallorca’s most important and famous marathon has a new name: Zafiro Hotels, which are dedicated to sport and healthy activities, are the main sponsors and will give their name to this competition in the coming years. The Zafiro Palma Marathon will take place on 13 October, with a route that runs through Palma’s most important and famous squares, such as the Cathedral, the Old Town and the seafront.

It will hardly be possible to evade them: Around 10,000 athletes will walk through Palma on Sunday from 9 a.m., in many places it will not be possible to get through the city by car until the afternoon, as it has been in previous years. As usual in October the biggest sport event of the municipality after the sail hype Copa del Rey at the beginning of August is coming up, the Zafiro Palma Marathon.

Most athletes go for the 42.195 km route, which leads through the city centre and the main streets such as the Borne-Boulevard and the Rambla. Buildings such as the cathedral and the town hall are passed, but the route also extends along the Paseo Maritimo Boulevard to the harbour. The App “Sportmaniacs Baleares” broadcasts the event in real time.

The Hotel Group Zafiro, which has twelve hotels in the Balearic Islands, also sponsors a half-marathon and a ten-kilometer run, which start later - at 10.10 a.m. and 10.20 a.m. - and of course end before that. The award ceremonies start at 12.30 pm. Already on Saturday on the Spanish national Day, several children’s runs will take place on the Avenida Antonio Maura.

“We want to promote again sustainable tourism this time”, says Zafiro speaker Heike Genschow. “It has increasingly been proven that sporting events are an excellent motivation to travel.” They make sure that visitors find the island with their families even beyond the peak season. This year the event with 44 percent of women is “extremely feminine”, Genschow continued. She is particularly excited about the German Sabine Stadler, who won the Palma-Marathon in 2016 and wants to win again this time.

As already under the aegis of the travel company Tui, most of the participants, who are on average 45 years old, come from Germany, namely 36 percent. 21 percent come from Great Britain, 16 percent from Spain, five percent from France and a further five percent from Sweden. Overall, athletes from over 50 countries are expected at the giant event. Since also now again several humans advanced age are announced, the present physicians will be particularly attentive. The Methuselah among the marathon runners will be 83 years old this time. The neuralgic centre of the big event will be the Parc de la Mar below the Cathedral, as in the past 15 years. Here VIP tent, changing zones, showers, a medical center and a Marathon Shop will be located.

We wish all runners, visitors, family members and residents a great event!
