Worth a visit in autumn time – a delicious roasted lamb at Es Verger in Alaro

Posted by Sandra on 25.08.2015

Sometimes, particularly in the cooler months, only a hearty slow-cooked meat dish will hit the spot. But how do you choose from the many traditional Mallorcan restaurants known for their lamb and suckling pig? The rustic Es Verger, between Alaró village and the mountain-top castle, is famously known as ‘the lamb restaurant’ for its succulent slow-roasted and beer-basted lamb. The restaurant “Es Verger” must be experienced. It is a rustic mountain farm on which for generations nothing has changed.

You are sitting at simple wooden tables in a rural, simple room. The large fireplace gives a nice and warm atmosphere in the cooler times of the year. Especially in the winter months the Es Verger is visited very actively. There is a popular hiking route to the castle of Alaró. The owner Franziska can look book on several decades of cooking experience and serves a simple and honest cuisine like snails in garlic sauce, fried pork with potatoes and vegetables or the tasty bread soup. This rustic restaurant is to be described “authentic”, depending on the position of the viewer or “grubby”. On the terrace you sit on plastic chairs and sometimes you have to wait a long time to get served by the mainly older service staff. Nevertheless, Es Verger has been an island institution since a very long time.
